3G/HSPDA or ADSL – How do you connect to the internet?

The 3G vs ADSL debate is a topic which often comes up. So, which do you prefer: 3G or ADSL? It’s probably more a case of: which works better for your needs? The mobility of 3G and it’s ever increasing speed are it’s biggest advantages. No matter where you are, just plug that 3G modem into your laptop and away you go. And it’s really quick, depending on the area of course. But when you need something solid and cheaper for home or the office, ADSL does the job. The market is changing as well with uncapped ADSL options on offer. So if you’re into your downloading, ADSL is the way to go. For now, that is.
Let’s look at the two options:
3G/HSDPA:
- What do you need?
- A laptop or PC.
- A 3G USB modem or a 3G data card.
- What do you get?
- Internet access anywhere, anytime. As long as you’re in an area with network coverage.
- Fast broadband speeds – 3G USB modem speeds and speeds offered by the 3G service providers are increasing all the time.
- No need for cables, Telkom lines etc.
- Why get it?
- You can connect to the net wherever you are.
- It’s really easy to set up – plug-in, install the software and surf.
- It’s fast.
ADSL:
- What do you need?
- A laptop or PC.
- A Telkom telephone line.
- An ADSL modem or router.
- An ADSL subscription and account from an ADSL service provider.
- What do you get?
- Reasonably solid 24/7 internet access.
- Why get it?
- It’s cheaper than 3G/HSPDA.
- You can now get uncapped ADSL packages.
Now you just have to decide which option is best for you. Maybe you’re a 3G kind of person or maybe ADSL does the job for you at home or at the office. Or perhaps, having both options is the way to go for you, so you always have the internet access you need.
Look around, there are some good options available.

I prefer 3G. I’ve had hassles with ADSL – not being able to connect etc, and that’s in one location. Yes, 3G isn’t great in some areas but when I’m in the city, it flies!
