It’s probably the most exciting gaming development of 2012. So, what is it exactly? It’s the Sony PlayStation Vita (PS Vita) and it’s headed to South Africa soon. The new handheld console will feature front and rear cameras and Augmented Reality (AR) technology which gives you the ability to integrate your environment into your gaming. On first impressions, the successor to the PSP looks amazing.

Although it’s very compact, the PS Vita delivers rich quality graphics in a 5″ organic light emitting display (OLED) display. Controlling games is an all round experience with multi-touch functionality on the front screen, a rear multi-touch pad and dual analog sticks. The six-axis motion sensing system is key to the PS Vita experience and consists of a three-axis gyroscope and three-axis accelerometer, with a three-axis electronic compass system. The PS Vita will also have 3G/Wi-Fi connectivity (dependent on connection availability).

Games-wise, there’s already a good selection of titles such as Uncharted: Golden Abyss, EA Sports FIFA Football, Formula 1 2011, Assassins Creed, Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3, Ridge Racer VITA and Everybody’s Golf. Software titles will be available on small flash memory-based cards made for the portable console. It looks like PSP titles, PS one classics, minis, videos and comics will all be compatible with the Vita as well.

Here are some other technical specs of the PS Vita:

  • ARM Cortex A9 core (4 core) processor
  • 512MB main memory with 128MB VRAM
  • 5″ OLED capacitive multi-touch screen display
  • 960 x 544 resolution (16:9) with 16 million colours
  • Size: 182.0mm x 18.6mm x 83.5mm
  • Weight: 260g – 279g depending on model

As with all new consoles, the true test will be when you actually get your hands on one. The good news is that you don’t have to wait long. It looks like a February 2012 release – the 22nd to be exact. You’re looking at around R2,700 for the Wi-Fi model and R3,300 for the 3G & Wi-Fi model.
